Is this a good camera for taking action sport pictures in a gym? What would be good camera settings in low light conditions, also wich lens to use for close-ups?
I can see why this camera has appeal to you. A low price DSLR with two lenses giving you a moderate wide angle lens and a relatively long lens (2x focal length multiplier) .
It does use the Compact Flash memory card which is almost bullet proof when compared to the xD card the camera also supports. Stick with the CF cards.
The camera will shoot with an ISO up to 1600, which should be fine in a well lit gym. The two lenses are just 2/3rds of a stop slower than most good sports lenses (f/3.5 vs. f/2.8) so you should be able to stop some of the action, but you may find using a flash system more effective.
Outdoors, there is no problem with using the 40-150mm zoom exposure wise, but you may find yourself wishing you had a 300mm lens instead.
If you mean by closeup photography, macro, then you may want to just buy some close up diopter lenses for the front of your lens.
When you look around at the sporting events, you will probably see photographers with Nikon and Canon cameras with at least 300mm lenses ... sometimes with 400mm or 600mm lenses. There is a reason for this, but on the other hand, you do not have a budget of up to $12,000 either.

Rechargable Battery Olympus Do you own the Canon PowerShot S5 IS?
What do you think of it? Do you like it? I'm really just looking for a basic review. Also, tell me about battery life. I currentlly have a Olympus FE-115, and the battery life is horrible! I'm a little worried about the Canon because it, too, runs on AA's. I know you can buy rechargable AA's, and I did, and it didn't help, at all.

These cameras use a lot of juice these days
If you are going to go the rechargeable route, make sure that you use a good battery,
a Hi capacity one too,
at least a 2500 mAh
or a 2900 mAh
use a charger like the Powerex MH-C401FS
that has both the "slow charge" position, to charge the battery up better, fuller
or that "fast charge" for when you do need it in a hurry.
My wife has the Canon S-3 and really likes it, but we had trouble with batteries too, till I got the best rechargeables, and the Powerex.
We keep a "backup set" charged up in her camera case.
She does like her S-3, and the S-5 is the upgrade to it.
Pretty good for a point n shooter, when she doesn't want to carry around one of my DSLR's.
Likes the wide/tele zoom,
likes the fact that she can zoom while shooting movies, most cameras can't.
For long trips or vacations, make sure to take the Olympus LI-50B extra battery along for the ride! Never run shot of power with this backup. Charges in aproximately 2 hours....
I have an some type of Olympus digital camera but we can't found the charger to go to can we still use it without a charger if we just replace the camera with new batteries?
