Vivitar Flash Canon Would a Vivitar 728 flash work with a Canon XTI with all its functions?
I've been reading around and it seems that a vivitar 728 would work with an xti but not the autofocus and other functions. could anyone tell me if this is true, and if it is, is their anyway to adjust it?
actually i already the vivitar flash. i'm planning to buy an xti and just wanted to know if its going to work
Technically, yes, the flash will fire. That's about the only "function" that will work on the flash. Everything else will be pretty much full manual. You'll lose the E-TTL flash exposure system, which can calculate flash power based on distance (E-TTL 2 does this), so you'll be manually adjusting power on the flash- a lot of your photos will be guesswork.
Also, if something goes wrong and your camera gets fried, Canon will point at Vivitar and claim their hardware caused it and may refuse to service your camera as a result. Is there something pushing you towards the 728 that you wouldn't get with the 430EX or 580 EX II? Like the previous poster said, it would be more advisable to have a system you know is compatible with each other.

Lexar Professional 300x UDMA CompactFlash Memory Cards Review
I have a Metz 76 MZ-5 and have been trying to find some accessories to help modify the light, so far I have found lastolite’s eazybox hot shoe for a soft box and I have a stofen diffuser however I seem to have limited options compared to someone with a standard hotshoe flash as most modifiers (such as interfit strobies and honl) are too small to fit the metz.
Has anyone had any experience/advice with this?
Umbrellas won't matter what size the Metz flash head is - worth a try for soft light. Re: beauty dishes/snoots - have you considered DIY?
I made a beauty dish from a stainless steel bowl & aluminium plate as a return (sprayed the inside with white car primer & the outside black) and snoots are pretty easy to make from any stiff material such as card.

A dramatic, eye catching photo can mean dramatic profits. Getting a well exposed photo is extremely important. Photographers often turn to a flash to help light the scene. The problem is that flash can cause harsh reflections or glare spots or create deep shadows that distract viewers. This little, portable universal external flash diffuser will prevent those problems when using a flash. Simply pu...

Soft Flash Bounce What can I use for my flash in wide open spaces? D40?
I have a D40 Nikon DSLR with a 400 flash. I love the bounce effect, but I wanted to ask what I would use to use flash in doors in a room where the surfaces may be too far off for the bounce to be used effectively.
Would I use a diffuser? Or is there an accessory I can buy to remedy the lack of nearby surfaces, while still getting a soft light effect?
Flash has and will always be limited in its reach.
Yes, you can soften the light using a diffuser. The most popular diffuser is the Gary Fong

Ask your instructor about the 'inverse square law' in relationship to artificial lighting. This will help explain why most editorial photographers prefer to to use the ambient light they find when on location.
