Shoe Cord Canon Does the Canon Off-Camera Shoe Cord work with non-Canon flash?
I have some old flashes and I was wondering if I could use them with my Canon XTi. They work on the on-camera shoe, but I'd like to use Canon's cord to get an off-camera lighting effect. Do I have to buy Canon Speedlights for this to work?
Thanks for the link. One flash I have been using occasionally is a Vivitar 2000, which apparently uses 180+ volts according to your source. If you are correct about Canon recommending 6 volts then I should surely not use that again.
I would imagine if have a canon module so they work on the hotshoe then the pins would be in the same position to work on the cord. I would caution you to make sure the old flash is safe to use. Some strobes have very high trigger voltages. Modern digital cameras are not rated for these high voltages. Canon recommends only 6 volts. What normally happens with the ones that are too high voltage is that they work for a while then they stop and you find you have burned out the circuits in your camera body and have an expensive repair bill

Reverse Mount Macro 58mm reverse mount adaptor work on the canon XSi to take macro pics?
I'm an amateur photography in highschool.
So my budget is pretty limited.
I have a canon rebel XSi
EF-S 18-55mm IS lens
EF 50mm f1.8 II lens
EF-S 55-250mm IS lens
I'm interested in beginning macro photography, but i'm not ready to invest a lot of money into it.
I was looking at different
lens adaptors, and came across a 58mm reverse mount lens adaptor on amazon. The reveiws say it takes adequate close up pictures. but I was shocked that the price was a mere $13.
Is this correct? and do I have to attach this to a certain lens?
Can you briefly explain how it works & any suggestions or advice would be apprechiated.
Thank you :•)
Some re-editing done 6/13/10:
I once bought one of those things about 30 years ago to use on my film camera. Reversing the lens could bring an extremely close focus. It was extremely difficult to focus with a prime focus lens, as all I could do was adjust the distance of the camera, which would have taken a fancier tripod than I had to make the very fine adjustment. When a lens like those is mounted normally it is the outer barrel assembly fixed to the camera, so rotating the focusing ring moves the inner barrel assembly of those lenses in or out. With the lens reversed the inner barrel assembly remains fixed to the camera, and rotating the focusing ring just slides the outer barrel assembly up and down on it. I don't think I ever got a really good picture by using it. In those experiments shorter focal length lenses gave more magnification because of more greatly reduced focusing distance.
I suppose you could try it. Exposure would have to be manual only, and it probably won't meter. I think that you would be limited to maximum aperture, because your lenses have no mechanical aperture ring, and reversed there is no electronic control of the aperture.
The 50mm might work with a reverse adapter (but not the 58mm model). It would be as difficult to focus as my earlier experiments with prime focus lenses, because it has an inner barrel assembly with all lens elements fixed in relationship to each other.
If the 18-55mm or 55-250mm works at all it can be manually focused, because focusing is normally done by rotating the front element, which changes its distance from the other elements. Since the front element would be fixed to the camera with the reverse adapter, you would not actually be rotating the focusing ring; you would grasp some normally immovable portion of the barrel to rotate it relative to the front element.
Oh, on the issue of compatibility:
It needs to have the right bayonet mount for your camera (i.e. Canon). It must be the right filter thread size to fit the lens. For the Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS or the EF-S 55-250mm IS a 58mm filter size is correct. The 58mm adapter will not fit the 50mm f/1.8, because that lens uses a 52mm filter.
By mounting the lens backward on a camera body, you can create amazing macro images. It is extremely fun to turn you lens into a macro lens. You can mount lenses with 52mm filter thread size of any brand. It will be more fun to use on lenses with aperture dial to adjust aperture....
